There are about 23,000 people in our community living with a disability. This means Canterbury-Bankstown has a high percentage of people needing support, compared to greater Sydney.

Support can include reducing physical, communication and social barriers, as well as attitudes and stigmas attached to people living with a disability.

Our plan challenges these barriers so that everyone in our community, regardless of disability, can live more freely and equally in Canterbury-Bankstown.

The Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2022-26 will guide CBCity to become a more inclusive and accessible City. Aligned with our Community Strategic Plan, it will address the needs and barriers of people living with disability in CBCity.

The Plan follows four key focus areas:

1. Attitudes and Behaviours – the community’s attitudes and behaviour towards people with disability, which may impact access to employment and/ or opportunities to contribute to social, economic and cultural life;
2. Liveable Communities – covers areas such as universal housing design, access to transport, community recreation, Council policies and social engagement;
3. Employment – increasing the employment rates of people with disability; and
4. Systems and Processes – improving the systems and processes that enable people to access services and support they need in the community.

What we heard

To develop this plan, we consulted with people with disability, carers, support workers, family members, service providers, our staff, Reference Group members and other interested stakeholders. The following points were highlighted as being important to our community and have been incorporated into the draft plan.

• Improving attitudes towards people with disability and people living with mental health conditions in the community;
• Making it easier to get around our City;
• Improved transport and parking;
• Increased employment opportunities;
• Improve ways to finding important information;
• Increased social activities; and
• To feel included where they live.
